Summary for August: Weeding Out Workplace Paternalism

During August 2005, participants on eSight’s "Swimming in the Mainstream" (SiM) blog talked about how individuals with a disability can best deal with paternalism on the job.

In the process, they came up with some suggestions about what both employees and employers can do to both prevent and combat it.

Those suggestions are summarized in a new eSight article for employers, "Weed Out Paternalism in the Workplace."

It’s the result of last month’s SiM blog discussion topic about gaining adult status in the workplace.

Thank you for your submissions!

We’ll distribute widely your collective wisdom to employers – all made possible by a grant from the American Express Foundation.

If you have further thoughts to add to the discussion capped by "Weed Out Paternalism in the Workplace" and currently highlighted in Employer Resources, please do so here.

Hello, this is Betty Banks

My advice to you, is to keep your nose clean and mind your bussiness, and work really hard and people will notice you and say good things about you, and do not get involved in office gossip.

For me it is all about focusing on the responsibilities I have, doing my job to the best of my ability and trying to add new contacts that will inable me to place more consumers. I avoid gossip and do not get involved in the power struggles and games played in the typical work place. My consumers are my primary responsibility.
