FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

eSight Members Explore Link
Between Vulnerability and Authenticity

(New York City, NY - June 3, 2005) During their recent discussions in various eSight Career Network forums, eSight members explored topics which inadvertently led to a set of four strengths job seekers with a disability can potentially offer prospective employers.

Those potential strengths certainly need to be further explored but may be helpful in gaining broader awareness among hiring managers about how effectively living with vulnerability can lead to the ability to form authentic interpersonal relationships in the workplace, observes Jim Hasse, senior content developer for eSight at http://www.eSight.org.

According to Hasse, the four strengths, identified through eSight member discussions, are:

First, job candidates with disabilities may be more familiar than others in a typical work group with the physical, emotional and psychological vulnerability of human beings.

Second, by living with a vulnerability, those job candidates may have had an opportunity to fine tune their problem-solving abilities and, as a result, develop self-acceptance and self-confidence despite not quite fitting society's accepted norms.

Third, by recognizing that vulnerability is universal in people, those problem-solvers, armed with a quiet self-confidence, may have just the right touch to reach out and create valuable business-generating networks for companies, large and small.

Fourth, confident problem-solvers, despite living with a disability, may more likely recognize the need to earn and create a niche for themselves in today's competitive workplace - that no one else is probably going to do it for them - than those without an apparent vulnerability.

Those four eSight member insights are summarized for employers in the article, "'Swimming in the Mainstream' Insight: Tapping Job Candidates Who Have Transformed Vulnerability Into Authenticity."

eSight members first approached the connection between vulnerability and authenticity in eSight's "Swimming in the Mainstream" blog during the May 2005 discussion.

Available at www.tabinc.org/sim/, eSight's "Swimming in the Mainstream" blog is designed to help:

  1. eSight members share their personal experiences as individuals with a disability in the workplace.
  2. Job seekers showcase their accomplishments to prospective employers.
  3. Employers expand their awareness of disability employment issues.

The blog is made possible by a grant the American Express Foundation has awarded to The Associated Blind, Inc.

The Associated Blind, Inc., a 66-year-old non-profit organization, has been providing members of eSight Careers Network opportunities to collaborate on disability employment issues through accessible online discussions and resource building since October 2000.
