FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

eSight Bloggers Show Employers
How to Level Recruiting Field

(New York City, NY - May 6, 2005) How can employers make sure they're recruiting job candidates on a level playing field so they don't overlook potential star performers whose underlying potential may not be evident due to a physical disability?

That's the underlying issue that ran through the April 2005 discussion on eSight Career Network's "Swimming in the Mainstream" blog about what to do when individuals who seek meaningful work in mainstream businesses find themselves at a disadvantage due to their disabilities.

After thinking about the conversation, Jim Hasse, senior content developer for eSight, narrowed the group's concerns down to four false assumptions about disability and employment.

Using the eSight bloggers' own words, he summarized the four presumptions for career counselors, hiring managers or other decision makers in the mainstream workplace in an article for eSight's Employer Resources section.

The article, "'Swimming in the Mainstream' Insight: Creating a Level Recruiting Field," is available at www.esight.org/View.cfm?x=1777

Citing the 70 percent unemployment rate among people with disabilities, Barney, one of the blog participants, warns both his fellow job seekers and prospective employers:

"The hiring interview must be an open dialogue. Anything less and I can predict the outcome without too much error..."

Available at www.tabinc.org/sim/, eSight's "Swimming in the Mainstream" blog is designed to help:

  1. eSight members share their personal experiences as individuals with a disability in the workplace.
  2. Job seekers showcase their accomplishments to prospective employers.
  3. Employers expand their awareness of disability employment issues.

The blog is made possible by a grant the American Express Foundation has awarded to The Associated Blind, Inc.

The Associated Blind, Inc., a 66-year-old non-profit organization, has been providing members of eSight Careers Network opportunities to collaborate on disability employment issues through accessible online discussions and resource building since October 2000.
