FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

eSight Offers Employers Insight to
Identify Unique Confidence-building Experiences

(New York City, NY - March 31, 2005) The confidence-building experiences for job seekers with disabilities may be quite different than those of their non-disabled counterparts - but just as valid.

That's the underlying message that ran through the March 2005 discussion on eSight Career Network's "Swimming in the Mainstream" blog about how individuals with a disability develop the self-confidence to obtain meaningful work.

The eSight bloggers cited specific accomplishments in their careers which spurred them to further growth.

Jim Hasse, senior content developer for eSight, selected examples from that conversation to illustrate eight qualities he believes would help an employer identify job candidates with a disability who could help extend a company's success.

Hasse uses examples from the blog discussion to illustrate those eight qualities in an article, "'Swimming in the Mainstream' Insight: Unique Confidence-building Experiences," that he wrote specifically for employers.

The article is available on eSight's Employer Resources section at http://www.esight.org/View.cfm?x=1770

"The experience job candidates with disabilities present to you during a job interview may be extremely relevant to the criteria you use in choosing who to hire because those experiences are often deeply personal and reveal a candidate's bedrock character," Hasse tells employers in the article.

Nancy O'Connell, executive director of The Associated Blind, Inc., parent organization of eSight Careers Network (http://www.eSight.org), invites those in the disability community to pass the "confidence building" article onto career counselors, hiring managers or other decision makers in the mainstream workplace who might benefit from the insight generated by eSight members.

Available at http://www.tabinc.org/sim/, eSight's "Swimming in the Mainstream" blog is designed to help eSight members share their personal experiences as individuals with a disability in the workplace, help job seekers showcase their accomplishments to prospective employers and help employers expand their awareness of disability employment issues.

The blog is made possible by a grant the American Express Foundation has awarded to The Associated Blind, Inc.

The Associated Blind, Inc., a 66-year-old non-profit organization, has been providing members of eSight Careers Network opportunities to collaborate on disability employment issues through accessible online discussions and resource building since October 2000.
