Internships at The Disabilities Network of New York City
The Disabilities Network of New York City is offering several new, exciting and unique internship opportunities.
Interns will gain valuable skills that can be transferred to careers in nonprofits and advocacy. Positions may be customized to fit the organization's needs and the intern's skills, experience and interests.
Intern will assist the Director of Development. May include writing grant proposals and letters, communicating with donors, developing budgets, researching potential donors and working with a donor database.
Depending on the organization's current needs, intern may serve as liaison to the Board of Directors or assist in event coordination. May also include writing marketing materials, processing donations and working with the Director of Advocacy on membership outreach.
Skills & Responsibilities:
- Organized, good writer and communicator, able to work under deadline;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office; and
- Experience with databases helpful.
Fundraising experience is a plus but not required. Intern may have opportunities to take fundraising workshops.
Intern will assist the Director of Advocacy. We are recruiting for this internship on a rolling basis for individuals willing to commit to at least 6 weeks. Internship provides an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual to develop new skills and gain professional development. This position will be 20 hours per week and is unpaid. As internships are designed to be instructional, intern will be involved in the policy and advocacy work of the Disabilities Network of NYC. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing, revolving basis.
Skills & Responsibilities:
- Perform outreach activities to increase membership and member involvement;
- Assist with preparation of the annual Disability Policy Agenda, including tip sheets, City Council testimony and community training and outreach;
- Find appropriate speakers and organize independent living workshops and support groups as needed;
- Maintain a list of local resources and provide information and referral to people in the community as needed; and
- Attend meetings of other organizations related to disability issues.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of disability-related issues and/or experience living with a disability;
- Good organizational skills;
- Ability to take initiative and work without a great deal of supervision;
- Basic computer skills (e-mail, internet research, etc.) required; database management preferred; and
- Strong work ethic and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Intern will assist curator and staff with acquiring film entries as well as in researching, marketing & outreach to filmmakers, students and moviegoers. Help with outreach and maintaining database entries. Assist with obtaining and marketing screenings prior to monthly events. Also support staff with screenings, events, and promotions during the festival and throughout the year.
Skills & Responsibilities: Individual should be interested in disability and in film and film-related events. We are looking for a quick thinker, team player, problem solver and self-starter who are organized, detail-oriented, knowledgeable, friendly and outgoing.
Intern will assist with the organization's administrative duties. May include data entry/database management, filing, Internet research, note taking, copying, processing donations and submitting payment requests according to the policies of our fiscal sponsor.
Depending on the organization's current needs, the intern may assist in event coordination or serve as liaison to the Board of Directors, assistant to the Executive Director or the main administrative contact for the staff.
Skills & Responsibilities:
- Organized, detail-oriented, patient, persistent;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office; and
- Experience with databases helpful.

The White House Internship Program
The White House Internship Program offers an excellent opportunity to serve our President and explore public service. The Washington Center For Internships and Academic Seminars, A Scholarship Program for College Students with Disabilities
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is pleased to announce it will continue to help increase employment for students with disabilities through an academic internship program. Through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Labors Office of Disability Employment Policy, The Washington Center is working to help students develop leadership skills and gain valuable work experience in public service. The Washington Center will complement students professional experience with solid academic training for credit from highly qualified instructors. In addition, students will be exposed to community, national and international leaders through workshops, seminars, lectures, embassy visits and networking events held throughout the course of each semester. The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) will offer technical guidance and support to the program.
The Washington Center is able to provide a total of 50 competitive scholarship awards in the amount of $8,500 for each eligible undergraduate student with disabilities interested in working in the executive, judicial or legislative branches of the federal government during the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters (scholarships are not available in the summer).
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Applicants Must:
- Be enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate;
Be at least a second semester sophomore at the time of the internship - Have at least a 2.75 GPA; - Show proof that they will receive academic credit for the internship;
- Be a U.S. Citizen; and
- Self-identify as a person with a disability as defined by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
ADA defines a person with a disability as a person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities OR a person that has a record of such impairment OR * a person that is regarded as having such impairment

- Two letters of recommendation;
- A letter from your campus disability services office, a vocational rehabilitation office OR a physician treating you for your disability confirming the fact that you have a disability;

ACCOMMODATIONS
Workplace The Washington Center will work with the government agencies hosting the interns to ensure reasonable accommodations are provided to students who may need them to successfully complete their job duties.
Student Housing
The Washington Center provides all students accessible housing during their participation in the program in Washington, D.C. The Washington Center will work with students on a case-by-case basis to ensure accommodations are met. Our housing facilities offer shared facilities in apartment buildings in Northern Virginia and Maryland. They are located in well-lit, high traffic areas that provide secure and comfortable surroundings. The apartments are fully furnished, and provide local telephone and basic cable service, 24-hour front desk, and laundry facilities.
Academic Training The Washington Center will work closely with students with disabilities to assess and provide accommodations (physical and programmatic) for students to complete the academic requirements of the program.
Local Transportation The Washington Center housing facilities are within close proximity to the subway system. The Washington Center will work with each student on a case-by-case basis to provide an orientation to and information on how to utilize public transportation to arrive at their place of employment and all Washington Center functions in a timely manner. The Washington Center will provide mobility training when and if necessary. In addition, The Washington Center will conduct an orientation to answer questions about transportation, general accessibility issues, accommodations and internship sites.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Enrollment in an academic course provided by The Washington Center (there are over 20 courses to select from);
- Completion of a portfolio that documents students internship experience and reactions to the Washington Forum sessions; and
- Approval to receive academic credit for the program from students home institution

The Emerging Leaders summer internship program for college students with disabilities offers paid summer internships at many of America's leading corporations like A & E Television Networks, Barclay's Capital, Bloomberg, Booz Allen Hamilton, CVS Pharmacy, Ernst & Young, FGM, Inc., Horizon Foundation, JPMorgan Chase, Key Span, KPMG, Lehman Brothers, Liz Claiborne Inc., Lockheed Martin, Merrill Lynch, Penguin Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers, SAIC, Sony Corporation, Sun Trust Bank and Walgreens.
These companies are proactive in recruiting qualified people with disabilities.
To be considered for an internship, you must be a current student, undergraduate or graduate, who has completed at least 45 credits (60 preferred), and is maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA.

Located in our nation's capital, the AFB Public Policy Center strives to expand possibilities for people with vision loss by advocating the formulation and implementation of federal legislative, regulatory, legal, research, and funding priorities honoring the capabilities and unique needs of children, working-age adults, and seniors who are blind or visually impaired. The purpose of these internships is to provide highly motivated individuals with professional-level exposure to, and practice with, the public policy and policy research process and an opportunity to apply specialized knowledge and skills in a dynamic environment.
Qualified Applicants
Candidates for these exciting learning experiences will possess a
bachelor's degree (or will attain the degree within the year) and be pursuing a graduate or professional course of study relating to special education, rehabilitation, law, public health, or related human services discipline. All successful candidates will also possess a demonstrable commitment to people with vision loss or other disabilities.
Structure
The AFB Policy and Research Internships are designed to provide maximum flexibility while affording participants with a serious opportunity to learn and work with clear goals and expectations. Each internship will run at least six weeks. Internships will be scheduled throughout the year. Although specific projects will vary depending on the interests and emerging expertise of each successful candidate, activities common to all internships are likely to include
- meeting with key congressional and federal agency staff;
- scheduling Hill and other appointments;
- preparing correspondence and briefing materials;
- drafting short newsletter articles and fact sheets for
distribution via AFB's website; - participating in coalition meetings within and outside the field of vision loss; and
- using tools and methods for conducting policy research.
Interns will be supervised by AFB's Director of Public Policy. Extensive mentoring by AFB Public Policy, Policy Research, and other professional staff will offer participants both support and guidance. It will be our pleasure to work with candidates to structure their individual internships to accommodate specific objectives, such as the attainment of academic credit for participation.

Gale A. Brewer's Newsletter for January 2006 announced that The Manhattan District Attorney's office invites Junior High and High School students to apply for the 2006 Summer Internship Program. Paid Internship Opportunities Available at NASA Field Centers for Students with Disabilities
The Equal Opportunity Programs Office (EOPO) and the Office of Higher Education is encouraging students with disabilities to apply for various paid internship programs located at the following NASA field centers: Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD), Ames Research Center (Moffett Field, CA), Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, OH), Independent Verification & Validation Facility (Fairmont, WV).
A majority of the internships are specific to majors within the STEM (Scientific, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. However, there are internships that are open to majors such as general business, accounting, finance, political science, communication, and education. In addition, internships are available at all levels (high school, undergraduate, graduate, doctorate fellows, and summer faculty positions).

Excellence through Challenging Exploration and Leadership (EXCEL)
WHAT: The EXCEL program provides blind graduating high school seniors and current college freshman a 5-week internship at three NASA Centers. Travel and living expenses will be paid for. Six EXCEL interns will be chosen from a nationwide search, with two additional students chosen as alternates.
WHERE: Two interns will be placed at each of three NASA centers--Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, Maryland), Johnson Space Center (Houston, Texas), and the Jet Propulsion Lab (Pasadena, California). A one-week orientation to the internship will take place at the NFB National Convention in Louisiville, Kentucky the first week of July.
WHEN: Orientation will begin on June 30th and the internships will end on August 14.
WHO: To be eligible for the program, you must be at least 18 years old at the beginning of the program and either a senior in high school who has been accepted to college or a current college freshman who is interested in pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field.

The National Mental Health Association Seeks Interns
The National Mental Health Association, a nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and mental illness, is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for its internship program. The program is designed to provide a unique opportunity for students to gain real-world work experience relevant to their academic and career goals.
