NYCETC and The NYC Workforce Investment Board (WIB) Announce Conference on "Building Career Pathways in New York City"

Using sector-based career pathways to provide low-wage workers with opportunities for lifelong advancement is a concept making inroads in New York City and around the country. While the concept is straightforward, designing and implementing successful sector pathway strategies can be complex, and necessitates strong partnerships. As these partnerships take root around the country, an emerging field of best practices is growing.

In a unique forum, the New York City Employment & Training Coalition (NYCETC), in partnership with the NYC Workforce Investment Board, is bringing these best practices from around the country to you this Fall in day-long event focused on building sector-based career pathway programs in New York City.

Welcome to the National Best Practices Forum, a new event format by the NYCETC designed to share great ideas and discuss emerging issues in workforce development. Recognizing that “one model does not fit all,” the forum is focused on specific ideas that could work here and what it would take to make them a reality.

Join your NYC workforce development colleagues on October 10th for an interactive discussion of great ideas from initiatives underway in Chicago, Washington State, San Francisco, and Arkansas, and discuss how aspects of these programs could work here in New York City.

  • Discover strategies for developing career pathway programs in such key New York City sectors as manufacturing, retail, hospitality, healthcare, nonprofit and legal services.

  • Understand the value of using state WIA discretionary and general funds to support local sector-based career pathway partnerships between employers, community colleges, CBOs and government.

  • Learn what it takes for a community-based organization to design a career advancement training program focused on specific sectors.

  • Hear how a creative use of TANF dollars can fund industry-specific curricula development and community college/CBO partnerships.

  • Gain insights about how to develop partnerships between sector-based One Stop Career Centers, industry and training providers that meet employer needs and help workers advance.
