CCVIP Course Schedule for Summer 2007: NYC
CCVIP, the Computer Center for Visually Impaired People, located in NYC, helps people with low or no vision get the most out of the personal computer, whether they have always had a visual impairment or have recently experienced vision loss. They offer a full range of classes and seminars, serving everyone from the computer savvy to novice users.

Getting Started
Free Open House
Join us for a hands-on demonstration of computers equipped with large-print and screen reading (synthetic voice) software. See our training facilities and meet our instructors and staff. Held the first Wednesday of the month. Phone reservation required with Madelyn Guilbeault: 646-312-1420.

Entrance Seminars for New Students
The following Entrance Seminars for New Students are designed to help students assess their skills and select appropriate courses. These seminars - notably Windows for Beginners and Exploring Windows - are prerequisites for most CCVIP courses and some seminars.
Exploring Windows
Cost: $50
Hands-on learning about accessing the basic operating system for almost all personal computers. Topics include keyboard alternatives to the mouse, strategies for understanding screen layouts and multi-tasking. Prerequisite: Type 20 words or more per minute plus some computer experience.

Windows For Beginners
Cost: $50
Introduces the basics of computer use and assistive technology while helping assess student skill level so that CCVIP staff can then determine which classes and seminars are most appropriate for each new student.
Prerequisite: Type 20 words or more per minute.

ZoomText Clinic
Cost: $175
Hands-on instruction with large print assistive technology. Students usually have some experience with computer applications in general or need more help using ZoomText's many features. Students with similar skill levels and needs are placed together.
Prerequisite: Keyboarding knowledge.

Earn a Certificate of Achievement
Students may mix and match any three courses in Microsoft business applications, such as Excel, Access and PowerPoint. The courses need not be taken within the same semester.
Upon completion of all three courses, with at least a B+ average in each course, students will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
Career Oriented Courses
Note: Costs include the $15 materials fee
MS Word: Level 1
Cost: $975
Work with MS Word 2007 and the MS Windows XP Professional Operating System to learn the basics, including using keyboard shortcuts. While you may then still choose to "point and click" with a mouse, computer users with low or no vision usually find touch typing techniques vastly improve their ease of use. Other topics include writing, editing and saving documents.
Prerequisite: Windows for Beginners or Exploring Windows.

Surfing the Internet
Cost: $975
Assistive technology makes it possible for people who are visually impaired to use e-mail and access the World Wide Web. Using Internet Explorer with assistive software, students will learn how to use the Outlook Express e-mail client and take advantage of multiple Web-based resources.
Prerequisite: Exploring Windows or MS Word: Level 2 or approval of CCVIP Staff.

Advanced Seminars
In today’s workplace, it is important to keep pace with advanced features of computer applications. These seminars devote several hours to a specific topic, enabling students to maximize their skills. There are no formal entrance requirements but participants must be excellent computer users in order to benefit from these seminars.
Exploring "NY Career Zone"
Cost: $175
Nycareerzone.org, a website developed by the Department of Labor, allows you to explore career options, assess strengths and weaknesses, and determine what career might be best for you. For those actively seeking a job, this site may prove invaluable; among other things it will help you create and store a resume online or take you to job search engines.

Podcasting
Cost: $75
Podcasting is a hybrid term that combines the brand name iPod with the word broadcasting. In this seminar you will learn to listen to podcasts using Windows Media Player, use freeware to download them and shareware and a microphone to create them. Work with popular MP3 format and plug-ins to play these shows on either the computer or an MP3 player.
Prerequisite: Proficiency using Windows and the Internet with assistive technology.

Reading Books in Daisy Format
Cost: $75
This seminar will teach students to use Victor Reader Soft, a popular and inexpensive computer application for reading books in Daisy format. It combines audio and text mode, allowing users to read the text on screen synchronized with audio. Additional features, like skipping from section to section and inserting bookmarks, will also be covered. Prerequisite: Computer and assistive technology knowledge.

PeopleTech Summer Institute - NEW
Cost: $750 (non-CUNY participants)
The PeopleTech Summer Institute is designed to offer students with disabilities the chance to focus on and heighten those skill areas that are critical to success in college. The course will include computer applications and assistive technology, library research, assistive technology for math and science, and self-advocacy. It is FREE to all CUNY students through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Career/College Computer Skills Check-Up
Evaluate strengths and detect training deficits with a comprehensive assessment of Windows, Word, Internet, Access and Excel skills. For the CCVIP Check-Up, a student will perform a series of tasks at the computer. Developed by CCVIP staff, the test yields a detailed summary of strengths and weaknesses. With this information, we can help students identify further training needs or make recommendations for college or job placement services. Call CCVIP at (646) 312-1420 for more information and fees.
Learning Lab
CCVIP's Learning Lab provides independent computer users and current CCVIP students an opportunity to practice and hone their skills. Staff is available to supervise the classroom and provide tutorials and course materials. The Learning Lab is equipped with an array of assistive technology designed to meet students' needs and preferences. Grants from the NY Community Trust and Lavelle Fund for the Blind have enabled CCVIP to offer substantial discounts to first time students who are college students, job seekers and seniors (55+) who are not eligible for training with CBVH, VESID, the VA or other sponsorship. We encourage you to call us to determine your eligibility for free or low fee courses.

Seminar Payment: Full payment is due one week prior to the seminar date. However, payment is your registration, which is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Course Payment: A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot in a course. Full payment is due one week prior to the start of the course.
Seminar Refunds: Seminar fees are fully refundable one week before the seminar date. There is a $15 penalty for refunds requested less than one week in advance of the seminar.
Course Refunds: Course refunds must be requested in writing. Requests postmarked prior to the first class will qualify for the full course fee, less a $50 registration fee. Requests postmarked prior to the second day of class will be for 50% of the full course fee, less a $50 registration fee. If we must cancel a class, the full course fee will be refunded.
