The Regional Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers (DBTACs) are pleased to announce an audio conference featuring Julie Carroll, Senior Attorney at the National Council on Disability (NCD) and Marilyn Golden, Policy Analyst for the Disability Rights Education Defense Fund (DREDF) discussing the report "The Current State of Transportation for People with Disabilities."

The report outlines the progress that has been made in providing accessible mainline transportation as well as the barriers that continue to exist for individuals with disabilities in rural communities or for those that rely on para-transit services. The report highlights on-going issues including problems with the infrastructure of bus stops, curb cuts and pedestrian signals which often create additional barriers for people with disabilities using public transportation. In addition, the report discusses problems with maintenance of lifts, unreliable audible automatic stop announcement systems and problems with staff training related to deploying the equipment and/or bypassing passengers with disabilities in lieu of keeping "on schedule".

Learn more about the report and recommendations to Congress and the President. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss the findings with the Author of the report, Marilyn Golden as well as learn more about NCD's plans from Julie Carroll of NCD.

This audio conference program is part of the 2005 ADA Audio Conference Series hosted by the Regional Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers (also known as "ADA and IT Centers"). The Audio Conference series features a variety of topics related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and are presented on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. The sessions are 90 minutes in length and are real-time captioned simultaneously on the internet. A transcript and audio recording of each session is archived on the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center web site.
