Technology Enables Abilities
Inexpensive Technology Enables Abilities to Appear
Surrey, BC - November 1, 2004 - Hyatt Computer Services is pleased to launch www.enablingabilities.com This website provides services, information and products for people who use or may benefit from using adaptive technology when using a computer.
Contrary to popular belief, adaptive technology does not need to be expensive. Hyatt Computer Services' Darrell Hyatt uses eadily available computer software and equipment, such as a switch adapted mouse for only $20, when working with his clients.
Using such tools, Hyatt is able to create a custom solution specific to the individual's specific needs and goals - whether its enabling a non-verbal little girl to share her story of summer holidays with her classmates, enabling a physically disabled boy with limited hand function to type "I love you, Mommy," or enabling a grandfather who finds the text mysteriously shrinking to use email to stay connected with his grandkids.
Hyatt says, "This is so natural for me. I really listen to what my clients want to be able to do with the computer, and then, considering their abilities, skills and difficulties, I combine the tools in such a way that enable clients to do what they want to do. As each individual is unique, so is each solution. Computers have infinite potential, and the trick is to pass that infinite potential onto individuals, regardless of their level of disability, impairment or computer skills."
Darrell Hyatt has over 25 years experience working with computers. Darrell has training in social work, business administration, computer applications and trainer development. He has extensive knowledge and experience with a wide variety of adaptive technologies. He wants to use readily available technology to enable more people's abilities to shine.

The web site has a "can do" attitude and that's a great message. Computer users who are blind need adaptive equipment that is much more robust and dare I say expensive than is currently being featured on the site. Nevertheless, many people will benefit!

There was a good article this week about web accessibility titled "Web Access to the Disabled" at
http://www.bizjournals.com/industries/high_tech/internet/2004/11/01/triad_focus1.html.
It features a gentleman who is blind that works at Wake Forest University.
